Living

The Dream and the Reality

British Columbia is an extraordinary place to call home, offering spectacular scenery, vibrant communities, outdoor adventures and a lifestyle that's hard to beat. But moving to BC is about much more than mountains, lakes and beautiful neighbourhoods. Everyday life can be surprisingly different from the UK. Communities are often spread out, public transport can be limited, social culture and pub life are different, and the cost of housing and everyday essentials can come as a shock.

Understanding sales taxes, tipping, healthcare through BC's Medical Services Plan (MSP), dental coverage and the challenges of securing a Canadian visa are all important parts of planning a move. Like anywhere, BC also faces real social challenges, including homelessness, drug use and neighbourhoods that may not be quite what you expected.

At BC or Bust, we believe the best way to embrace everything British Columbia has to offer is to arrive informed, prepared and with realistic expectations. Our firsthand experience helps you understand both the opportunities and the challenges, avoid costly surprises and make confident decisions about where and how you want to live. We're not here to discourage your dreams — we're here to help you make them work.

Working

Opportunities and Possibilities

British Columbia offers exciting employment opportunities, from seasonal work in ski resorts and hospitality to careers in forestry, construction, healthcare, technology and natural resources. However, understanding the local employment landscape is essential. Many smaller communities depend heavily on a handful of industries, such as logging, mining or oil and gas, while larger cities offer greater career variety but also increased competition and higher housing costs.

Wages and living expenses vary considerably by location and industry, and UK qualifications aren't always recognised automatically. Working legally in Canada generally requires the appropriate work permit or immigration status, and understanding Canada's National Occupational Classification (NOC) system, labour shortages and immigration pathways can help identify realistic opportunities. Canadian employment and immigration programmes are designed to meet labour market needs, with some pathways requiring employers to demonstrate that suitable Canadian workers aren't available.

At BC or Bust, we help you look beyond the job advertisements, understand regional employment opportunities, research employers and navigate the practical realities of working in British Columbia. Whether you're considering a working holiday, seasonal employment or a longer-term career move, our goal is to help you explore your options, avoid costly assumptions and take informed steps towards working in BC.

Playing in BC

Adventure Beyond the Ordinary

British Columbia is an outdoor enthusiast's mecca, where spectacular landscapes and endless opportunities for adventure are simply part of everyday life. From world-class skiing, snowboarding and mountain biking to kayaking, whitewater rafting, hiking, fishing and just about every water sport imaginable, BC has a reputation for taking outdoor recreation to the extreme.

But you don't have to be an adrenaline junkie to enjoy it! There's an incredible variety of softer adventures too, including scenic walks, wildlife watching, canoeing, hot springs, lakeside camping and a thriving agritourism scene featuring vineyards, orchards, farm experiences and local food. Understanding the seasons is important, though.

Summer and winter bring an abundance of activities, while the quieter spring and autumn shoulder seasons can present challenges, with unpredictable weather, reduced services and some attractions temporarily closed. Distances between destinations can also be much greater than visitors expect.

At BC or Bust, we help you discover the British Columbia that suits your interests, abilities and sense of adventure. Drawing on genuine local experience, we can introduce you to lesser-known destinations, independent operators and authentic experiences while helping you understand the practicalities of getting there, choosing the right season and making the most of your time in this extraordinary province.
